SUMMER BLOW

17TH JANUARY 2010

MANLY COMMUNITY CENTRE

The Summer Blow was held in January, much to the enjoyment of the ASS members and general public who where able to attend.

The day started off with a Master Class held by Bronwyn, who led us through Hachi Gaeshi, with the intention of giving the players some experience of playing in an ensemble - not a common or easy experience for many of us lonely Shakuhachi players - and also with the hope of providing a core repertoire for the Society.

This was the followed by a performance period during which all were welcome to play at any level in front of an eager and friendly audience. It was a wonderful opportunity with highlights of Bronwyn and David's duet of Shika No Tone and players ranging across all levels of experience playing honkyoku, new compositions, and duets on a variety of flutes.

Riley then followed with the first of his 2009 Princeton lectures and we look forward to hearing the unfolding saga as he continues the series over the following Blows of 2010.

Bronwyn completed the day with a session teaching massed Kinko Duets. This will hopefully become an ongoing feature of the Blows as we learn the joys of community shakuhachi.

The final decision of the day was to plan that the next Blow will be held within the next 4 months and will be held in Canberra.
